The quiet power of bone broth (and why it's now in every order)

Our grandparents made bone broth. Their grandparents made it. Across cultures, across centuries, people have been simmering bones into broth — not because it was trendy, but because it worked.

It still does. And from now on, you'll find it in every Kingfishers Bend order.

A small change worth mentioning

We used to send bones along with every bulk beef order so customers could make their own broth. Lovely idea in theory - in practice, the bones were taking up freezer space and the weekend broth-making project kept getting pushed to next weekend.

So we've swapped them out. Every order now includes ready-to-go bone broth — slow-cooked the proper way for 18+ hours, dried into a clean powder, ready in under two minutes. One 100g sachet per ⅛ beast (so a ¼ beast gets 2, ½ beast gets 4, whole beast gets 8). The value of what's in the bag is meaningfully greater than what the bones were giving you.

If you'd still rather have the bones to make your own from scratch - power to you. Just leave us a note at checkout.

Now, on to the good stuff.

What bone broth actually does

Bone broth isn't a wellness fad. It's whole food - the slow extraction of everything good that lives inside a bone, into something your body knows exactly what to do with.

Here's what makes it worth drinking:

Collagen for skin, joints, and tissue. Beef bone broth is rich in Type I collagen — the kind associated with skin firmness, joint comfort, and the structural integrity of connective tissue. Your body's natural collagen production drops from your mid-twenties onwards. Bone broth is one of the most bioavailable ways to top it back up.

Glycine for sleep and recovery. Beef broth specifically is higher in glycine than chicken — an amino acid that supports muscle recovery, liver function, and the quality of restorative sleep. A warm cup in the evening isn't just comforting. It's doing something.

Minerals you don't always get elsewhere. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and the trace minerals that modern diets often miss. Bone broth delivers them in a form your body actually absorbs.

Gut nourishment. Bone marrow provides nutrients that support the gut lining and immune function. A lot of people who drink bone broth daily report better digestion within a few weeks — that's not a placebo, that's the gut doing its job again.

Protein, without the bulk. Each cup is a clean, concentrated dose of amino acids. Particularly good if you're recovering from illness, training hard, or just want something nourishing that isn't a meal.

How to actually use it

The most common mistake people make with bone broth is treating it like a one-trick pony. It's not. Here's how we use it:

As a daily ritual. Stir 1–2 scoops into 250ml of hot water and drink it like tea. Morning is good. Evening is better — the glycine helps wind you down for sleep.

As proper stock. Use it as the base for soups, stews, gravies, braises, risottos — anywhere you'd reach for a stock cube. The depth it adds is the difference between "fine" and "where did you learn to cook?"

In your cooking water. Cook rice, quinoa, or pasta in broth instead of water. Tiny effort, big upgrade.

Post-workout or post-illness. When you need something nourishing but don't have the appetite for a full meal, broth bridges the gap.

Who benefits most

Honestly, most people. But you'll notice the difference fastest if:

  • You're physically active and recovering often
  • You're working on gut health, skin, or joint comfort
  • You're not sleeping as well as you'd like
  • You're rebuilding after illness, surgery, or a stressful stretch
  • You want a daily wellbeing habit that doesn't require a 12-step routine

Bone broth is what our grandparents drank because it made them feel better. The science just confirms what they already knew.

It's now in every order. Use it daily, use it in cooking, use it however suits you — but use it. Your body will let you know.
